It’s Friday! Time to recap my favorite links this week. Enjoy!
- This isn’t actually science fiction, but it’s close: NASA and DARPA sponsor a meeting to discuss their 100-year starship project.
- Tor is sponsoring a series of giveaways for Halloween: On October 31, they will run a 24-hour sweepstakes marathon, giving away books every hour. Winners get a pair of books: one to keep and one to give away.
- Giveaway: A lot of people seem to be excited about the new Brandon Sanderson book (The Alloy of Law) coming in November. Inkwing.com is giving away an Alloy of Law t-shirt. I’m not sure what the deadline is.
- In more Alloy of Law news, you can now download for free a six-chapter preview of the book from iBooks, Amazon/Kindle, Barnes & Noble/Nook, Sony, Kobo, or you can read it on Tor Books‘ website. If interested, click on whichever vendor/website works for your favorite e-reader.
- Giveaway: I’ve seen (and passed along to you) several contests to win advanced reading copies (ARCs) of The Alloy of Law, but Pat’s Fantasy Hotlist is raffling off three first-edition hardcovers. I suggest you hurry if you’re interested because there was no deadline listed.
- Do you like urban fantasy? Tor has posted the new urban fantasy books that it will release in November. Maybe you can find new reading material here. If that’s not your cup of tea, how about paranormal romance, science fiction, fantasy, or genre-benders?
- Giveaway: Calling all gamers! You can enter to win a copy of “Rage: Anarchy Edition” for your PS3 from ForeverGeek.com. Hurry — contest ends October 31.
- This is just for fun — How about a really cool Mistborn pumpkin? Or Star Wars pumpkins?
- I don’t have an iPhone 4 but it’s almost worth getting one just so I can wrap it in a protective police box case that curiously resembles Dr. Who’s Tardis.
- Here’s a fun article on CNN’s GeekOut blog about geeky parents and their children’s choices of costumes. At the end of the article, there are instructions for uploading pictures of videos of your most creative costume idea. The best ones will be featured on CNN.
- And how about a Mr. Potato Head Captain Kirk and Klingon Kor? That’s just not right.
- Would you like a chance to win a new Amazon Kindle Fire? Try here at CuriosityQuills.com.
- Here’s some cool geek news: A clothes retailer in Japan has introduced interactive hangers that, when picked up, trigger displays on a computer screen above relevant pictures and videos.
- Here’s one that caught my eye: 10 Sci-fi Gadgets We Wish Actually Existed.
If you have anything you’d like to add, leave a comment below. I love to hear from you.
Have a great weekend!
