Light of Eidon by Karen Hancock Free on Kindle

I’ve had a lot of fun exploring free e-books from Barnes & Noble and Amazon, especially since I got my iPhone with its free B&N and Kindle apps. (Did you notice I said “free”? Yeah, I’m kind of funny that way.)

I just became aware today that you can download free from Amazon Karen Hancock’s Light of Eidon, Book 1 in her Legends of the Guardian King series. This book is rated 4.5 out of 5 stars on the Amazon reader reviews–a rating it surely deserves.

I read this sometime back and enjoyed it so much I had to run out and buy the second volume, which was the only other volume available at the time. Then I snapped up the next two volumes when they were published as well. Light of Eidon was published in 2003 and won a Christy award that same year. If you’re a fantasy of Christian fantasy, I strongly encourage you to read this first volume of the series and then pick up the next three volumes as well. I think you’ll like it.

Ok. Enough about me. Here’s the official blurb with a link to the Amazon store where you can download the e-book to read on you Mac, PC, Kindle and Nook (or any smartphone that will accept those applications, such as Blackberry and iPhone). You can also click on the image of the cover above to get to the Amazon Kindle store.

Eldrin has devoted the last eight years of his life toward making himself worthy to touch and tend the Sacred Flames of Eidon, and he expects to be blessed for his sacrifices. However, on the eve of taking the vows that will irrevocably separate him from his previous life as Abramm Kalladorne, fifth son of the king of Kiriath, he is betrayed by his spiritual mentor and sold into slavery by his own family.

Soon Abramm is swept along by the winds of a new destiny as his successes in the gladiatorial games transform him into a hero around whom the oppressed masses can rally, and he discovers his suffering has molded him into something greater than he ever thought possible–to serve a purpose he never imagined.

Win a copy of The Enclave by Karen Hancock (Part 2)

enclavesm1This is Part 2 of a 3-day review. Part 1 can be found here.

I first found Karen Hancock on the shelf of my local Christian book store when I spotted “The Light of Eidon,” the first book in her Legends of the Guardian King series. After I read TLOE, I purchased and read the second book in the series, “The Shadow Within.” Then I kind of forgot about the books — after all, the last book in the series had not yet been published.

When the last book in the series hit the shelves, I dusted off the first two books, re-read them and then gobbled up the last two books in the series, “Shadow Over Kiriath” and “Return of the Guardian King.” Having finished the four-book series, I checked online to see if Karen had published anything else. Sure enough, I found that Karen’s debut book, “Arena”, was an adult science fiction book that, sadly, was no longer on the market. In that instance, I only have one word to say: Ebay! I tracked down a copy and was no disappointed for my efforts. Now I’m pleased to continue my collection of Karen Hancock novels with the addition of “The Enclave” to my library. This one’s keeper for a re-read later.

Karen’s latest effort is another stellar example of well-written fiction. I tried to pace myself, but once I reached one-third of the way through, I was hopelessly hooked and couldn’t put the book down until I had finished.

Come back tomorrow for another look at Karen Hancock and her fiction. For a chance to win a copy of “The Enclave”, leave a comment after this post. I will draw one lucky winner on Monday, July 27.

Win a copy of The Enclave by Karen Hancock (Part 1)

enclavesm1I’m very happy to be a new member of the Christian Science Fiction and Fantasy (CSFF) Blog Tour. I’m equally pleased that the first book I’m reviewing as part of the tour is from one of my favorite authors, Karen Hancock. “The Enclave” is a faith-based adult science fiction novel and, in my opinion, this award-winning author hits another home run with this book.

In “The Enclave,” Lacey McHenry gains a new start in life when she accepts a position at the prestigious Kendall-Jakes Longevity Institute. However, she finds herself relegated to the frog lab, where a disturbing encounter with a madman leaves her shaken emotionally and physically. Once it becomes clear that Institute security intends to cover up the incident, life becomes very uncertain for Lacey, even after she finds a possible ally in the form of the brilliant, but absent-minded geneticist, Cameron Reinhardt.

Through their unlikely alliance, Lacey and Cameron try to unravel the mystery around them, only to find out that it is much more dangerous than they had anticipated.

Come back tomorrow as I continue my review of “The Enclave” and take a peek at Karen’s other work.
