It’s Friday! Time for a weekend warm-up and my favorite links I stumbled across this week.
- Let’s start off with an Amazon freebie: James Rubart’s Book of Days is currently free for Kindle. I’ve read this and it’s a pretty entertaining speculative Christian novel. (Correction: The offer was for a limited time only and has since expired.)
- Cherie Priest’s steampunk Boneshaker is coming to the big screen! Here’s the news article…and here’s what I thought of the book.
- Because I love the stars (after all, what’s SFF without the stars??), here’s a gorgeous picture of the Milky Way taken in the Cook Islands.
- It’s about time somebody put together an SFF survival guide for geeks! Here’s io9′s SFF Ultimate Survival Guide for December.
- Geek news alert! Cyborg insects could be first responders in rescue situations. Pretty cool little beetle they’ve built.
- It’s Christmas — time to shop for that hard-to-please geek in your life. Don’t worry! Just visit http://www.thinkgeek.com/ and your troubles are over. Seriously, the kids and I spent more time than I care to admit browsing through this website, finding things that I never knew I needed until now. How about umbrellas? Everyone needs one, right? There’s the Broadsword handle, the Blade Runner style LED model and, my teens’ favorite, the Samurai sword handle.
- More movie news: Doctor Who is coming, the product of efforts by the BBC and David Yates (who directed Harry Potter). The search is on for screenwriters. Know anyone?
- The anime bucket list: Tor.com brings us Ten Anime Series You Should See Before You Die. As if that wasn’t enough, they also posted Ten Anime Films You Should See Before You Die. That should keep you busy for a while.
- Interested in reading about a cyborg Cinderella? When I put it that way, it sounds rather odd, but the excerpt posted online is really quite intriguing. You can find an exclusive excerpt of Cinder by Marissa Meyer here. I want to read this one.
- How about the U.K. man who got a new prosthetic arm with a smartphone dock built-in?
Finally, I leave you with a bit of Christmas cheer, SFF style:
The Sith Who Stole Christmas. I love this!
