A Spell of Vengeance is a short story based on a world created by DB Jackson, a world that will be explored further in his novel Thieftaker to be released on July 3, 2012. Thieftaker is also the first book in what looks to be a series centered around Ethan Kaille.
Based in colonial Boston, Ethan is a conjuror thieftaker who makes a living of sorts by retrieving stolen property and returning it to the rightful owners. However, Ethan is different from other thieftakers in that he is a spellmaker, a talent that comes in handy in his work. In A Spell of Vengeance, he is faced with the decision of whether to help a pair of merchants who have been threatened by a ship’s captain, who may or may not be a spellmaker himself. Yet Ethan finds he doesn’t know the whole story and what he discovers may cost him his own life.
A Spell of Vengeance is a short read offered free by Tor so readers can get a taste of this alternate historical world DB Jackson has created. I find it intriguing to read a historical fantasy based in the colonial Americas and I quite enjoyed it. It will be fun to see how this plays out in a full-length novel. Jackson is obviously a talented writer.
